The Club was officially formed in 1994 by a number of then current athletes and coaches who were meeting at the Clickimin Athletics Track on an informal basis each week and an Athletics Coach who had recently moved to Shetland, Andrew Winnie.  Following an advert in the Shetland Times calling for interested parties to gather at the Anderson High School, a meeting went ahead and volunteers at that meeting formed the first Club Committee.  Our current Chairwoman was one of the original volunteers, coming onto the Committee as a Junior Member.

The Club began with just a few athletes but through work that was carried out across the isles, many more athletes joined our athletics family and the Club has continued to grow and develop, with current numbers in excess of 200 and a waiting list in place.

Through the years the Club has been involved in many innovative and enjoyable competitions from Sports:hall Athletics, North District Championships, Scottish Schools Championships, the Grampian TV League, the Highland and Islands Performance and Participation Opportunity (HIPPO), the Junior Inter County, the Island Games, National Age Group Championships, the Friday Night Series and this season we have our first set of Open Graded Meetings (OGMs) alongside our Spring Opens and Club Championships.

The facilities have been steadily upgraded to the current track and field provision and layout at Clickimin, a lasting facility legacy from the Island Games being hosted in Shetland in 2005.  We are excited that the Shetland Island Games Association and Shetland Islands Council have expressed an interest in holding the Games in Shetland again and eagerly await confirmation of that.

2019 sees the Club turn 25 years old and anniversary celebrations are at the planning stage – we will keep everyone posted as to developments as we would love Club members past and present to come together and have a great time going over old memories and forming new ones!

To our current, past and future athletes, we say welcome to the new website, we hope you feel at home and treasure your athletics memories and experiences – let’s build some more!
