Shetland AAC’s Cross Country Season Kicks Off

The first race in the 2019/20 Shetland Amateur Athletics Club winter cross country series was held on Sunday 29th September. There was a huge turnout with 62 runners taking on the Knab, many enjoying the challenge of running cross country for the first time. Thankfully the weather was kind even if the route wasn't!

First race was the Under 9s. Reeta Moncrieff, Ross Drakeford and Robbie Robertson set the pace at the front from the start with the lead changing a few times. First over the finish line was Ross Drakeford, followed closely by Robbie Robertson and Elijah Adamson was third. Reeta Moncrieff was the first girl, with twins Hazel and Yvonne Nicolson in second and third respectively.
The Under 11s were next and ran the same course as the U9s but they did 2 laps instead of one. It was the Christie twins and Roma Robertson who set off at a blistering pace, with Isaiah Christie crossing the line first, pushed all the way by Roma. Second boy was Alex Christie with Sam Fraser not far behind. Morgan Taylor was second girl and Shannon Hough third.
The Under 13 and 15s was a combined race covering just over 1.5 miles. It was in-form Layla Todd who set the pace from the start making it look very easy, and she took the win. Behind her there was a good close race between a group of four boys. Cameron Black finished first U13 boy, followed closely by twin brother Lewis Black second and Callum Morrison third. Murray Todd was first U15 boy. Special mention must be made of the sprint for the finish line between Joe Hough and Mac Fraser, with a fine dive over the line by Mac ensuring it was a dead heat for 4th!

Ellie Bisset was the first U17 woman and Finn Rivett was first U20 man.

Andrew Grant won the five lap senior mens race ahead of Billy Lindsay and Juergen Kurtz. For the women it was Charlotte Black who crossed the line first, with Emma Morris second and Susan Linklater third.
The organisers would like to thank those who helped to set up the course, marshal and time-keep. The next race will be held on the 24th November.
