Athletes flourish at District Championships.
Thirty-five Shetland Amateur Athletics Club athletes headed off at the weekend to the Scottish Athletics North District Championships in Inverness. Another three SAAC athletes also headed over to Grangemouth for the Scottish Athletics East District Championships and Open Graded Meeting due to timetable issues with school exams. The championships are the first age-based competition of the outdoor season and for several of the younger athletes, this was their first exposure to this level of competition.
The Shetland athletes took part in 81 individual events over the weekend and came home with 25 medals across the under 13, under 15 and under 17 age groups spread over all and track and field events. Even more impressive was the 39 PB’s that were registered across the entire group.
One of the standout performances of the weekend was young Under 13 athlete Archie Irvine, who in his first competition won 3 District Titles in 100m, long jump and high jump, significantly ahead of the second placed athlete in each event.
