Shetland beat Orkney by a score of 56-40 to retain the Ian Williamson Cup during the Junior Inter County

Saturday afternoon saw the Junior Inter County athletics begin with the boys 1500m. Running for the boys were Dylan Black and Eldon Wigram. Dylan finished 2nd in 4.36.7 PB followed closely by Eldon who finished in 3rd in 4.41.8 PB. Next up was the girls 1500m. Aimee Smith and Kaylee Tulloch set off meaning business and finished strongly with Kaylee finishing 1st in 5.24.5 followed by Aimee in 2nd place in 5.31.5. Then it was over to the boys javelin where Stuart Bain finished 1st with a throw of 42.87m followed by teammate Ethan Tulloch who finished 2nd with 41.25m PB. The girls were doing the Shot Putt at the same time with Leigh Nicolson finishing 2nd with a throw of 9.75m. Stephanie Mercer finished 4th with 8.10m PB.It was then back to the track for the 200m. The wind had picked up and this made for a hard race. Up first were the boys. Shay Regan finished 2nd in 24.2s, closely followed in 3rd place by Shaun Ritchie in 24.3s PB. For the girls, Katie Dinwoodie finished 1st in 26.2s followed by Kara Sharp in 2nd place in 27.3s. It was then the boys Shot Putt where Stuart Bain finished 2nd with 11.03m PB and newcomer Max Orr finished in 4th with 9.42m PB. At the javelin Leigh Nicolson finished 2nd with 31.25m and Stephanie Mercer finished 4th with 27.34m PB. Back on the track saw the 800m starting with Seumas Mackay and Lewis Barclay. Seumas set off strongly and kept it going to the end finishing 1st and setting a new county record of 1.58.8. Lewis finished 2nd in 2.11.0. Aimee Smith and Kaylee Tulloch were up next. Aimee finished 2nd in 2.33.8 ahead of Kaylee who finished 3rd in 2.39.2. In the 100m Stuart Bain finished 2nd in 11.8s followed closely by Shaun Ritchie in 3rd in 11.9s. In the girls 100m Katie Dinwoodie finished first in 12.4s and Laura Newbold finished 3rd in 13.6s. The long jump saw Stuart Bain finish 1st with 5.89m with Shay Regan finishing 2nd with 5.83m. At the same time the girls high jump saw Jodie Walterson finish 1st with Annie Mowat a close 2nd with both girls jumping 1.50m PBs. Back on the track saw Seumas Mackay and Dylan Black take on the 400m with Seumas finishing 1st in 55s and Dylan in 2nd in 57.5s. In the girls 400m saw Riahnnon Thomason finish 3rd in 65.5s PB and Kirsty Thomson finish 4th in 68.5s. The girls long jump saw Maddie Smith take 1st with 4.83m and Jodie Walterson take 2nd with 4.28m. As this was going on an exciting boys high jump was taking place. Finn Regan and Harry Simpson finished 2= after clearing 1.70m PBs. This was a new under 15 boys Shetland record. Finally it was time for the relays. First up were the boys. Starting was Shaun Ritchie, into Seumas Mackay, into Shay Regan, into Stuart Bain finishing 1st in 50.2s. Next was the girls relay. Starting was Loni Wiseman, into Katie Dinwoodie, into Kara Sharp, into Laura Newbold. They finished 1st in 50.2. Unfortunately for Orkney their team were disqualified. Shetland finished with 56 points to Orkney’s 40 points to retain the Ian Williamson Cup. A spokesperson from the club said “ We are very proud of how our team performed. A special mention has to go to our debut athletes who played key roles in the victory. Outstanding performances and many pbs.”
